Chapter Ten

Crockett

Fate.

I didn’t believe in that shit any more than I believed in love, yet I’d thought about both more than once since jumping on the bike. As I roared down the highway, I was unable to get Kelly out of my mind. Even the rush of wind did little to cool me off. I was angry, incensed, and damn furious with myself for not demanding answers to questions earlier.

I was also enraged I’d walked out of the room without so much as attempting to comfort her. I’d watched as she slowly began to fade away, terror nearly ripping her apart and I’d been the same asshole as always.

Uncaring.

Unforgiving.

Hell, it was like I blamed her for the shit in my life. I knew the reason why. She’d managed to slide underneath the steel plate I’d secured around myself years before, digging into the remaining scars that had never healed. The clamp down wasn’t from her questions that she’d been so right about. It had nothing to do with the crazy deal we’d made, the feeling of ownership.

The adrenaline rush and constant fire burning deep within had been because of her gentle touch, the way her lavender eyes looked when she fell into extreme pleasure and the sound of her voice tickling against my skin.

Even now, I shivered like some lovesick boy, prepared to do anything he could in order to have the girl of his dreams.

I kicked down on the accelerator, blowing past several slow as fuck vehicles, using the rush of being back on the road to try to soothe what I knew could never be shut down again. I was alive and on fire, bitter at the world and prepared to fight to the death if necessary.

In order to make things right.

In order to kill the fucker who’d destroyed my life.

I kept the bike in the far-left lane, hunkering over the handlebars. There was nothing like a ride. Wind in my face. Nature all around me. Even the waning evening light seemed glorious after having spent a full week holed up in a cabin, a place I’d poured blood, sweat, and tears into creating.

Who was I kidding? I couldn’t stand being in the very location I’d sworn after the gruesome day I’d never live in. The choice to allow the cabin to be used as a safe house had been mine, but there hadn’t been another one to make.

Not if we wanted to continue to breathe.

Then Kelly had smashed through every barrier.

I roared the engine, once again weaving in and out of traffic, barely cognizant of the horns honking their disapproval.

What I’d been forced to realize was that I actually liked the girl. Liked? Shit, I craved her to very core of my being, but that could no longer get in the way of business.

The one other thing that riding did for me was provide a sense of clarity. On mile twenty, I’d allowed myself to go through the vicious details of why Michael’s name had furrowed in the back of my mind.
